🧳 What Visitors Need to Know
Pennsylvania is medical-only despite being surrounded by legal states (New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware). The medical program is large and well-developed but visitors without a PA medical card cannot legally purchase. Philadelphia is 1 hour from New Jersey's legal dispensaries. Pittsburgh is close to Ohio's legal market. Legalization has significant support but hasn't passed the legislature yet.
📍 Major Cities
Philadelphia has a large medical cannabis market. Non-patients must go to New Jersey (Camden, Cherry Hill) where recreational cannabis is fully legal and just 30 minutes across the Ben Franklin Bridge. The Philly cannabis culture is strong and legalization support is high.
Pittsburgh has good medical dispensary access. Ohio (which legalized recreationally in 2023) is right across the border. Expect Pittsburgh to develop strong recreational retail once legalization passes.
State College has a large student population with demand for cannabis. Medical only. The university community is supportive of legalization.
ℹ️ Dispensary hours, prices, and laws change frequently. Always verify before visiting.
📋 Legal Background
Pennsylvania's medical cannabis program launched in 2018 and has grown to hundreds of dispensaries statewide. Recreational legalization has significant legislative support but hasn't passed. Possession of small amounts for non-patients carries civil and criminal penalties depending on amount. Governor Josh Shapiro has supported legalization efforts.
